On the Cusp

WORDS : MUSIC : ACTION

Western popular culture has historically identified those who are not members of the privileged class as “others” or ”outsiders”, going so far as to cast men to play women’s parts, whites to perform in blackface, redface, and yellowface, and casting non-disabled actors in disabled roles. Where are the boundaries between sound, speech, act, silence, metaphor, and the real? Who determines who is “in”, who is “out” and who is “other”?

On the Cusp interrogates these and other boundaries. Liminal works of the past century—Sam Shepard’s Tongues, Samuel Beckett’s Cascando, Tristan Tzara’s The Gas Heart—are performed by artists with and without disabilities. Poised between theatre, music, and movement; between story, song, and act; between mundane, alien, and ecstatic—these works open onto worlds of difference and interrogate the boundaries between “outside“ and “inside”.

a ladder beckons … a narrative fractures … a voice is silenced …

On the Cusp includes performances by Enama, Arlene Malinowski, Steve Butters, Kao Ra Zen, Michael Herzovi, Andy Slater, Deirdre Harrison, Kyle Price, Michelle Kranicke, Alexandria Hill, Oli Harris, Jennifer Woodrum, and Chris Misch-Bloxdorf.

Original sound and music by Christophe Preissing
